Finally, when compared with other countries that have tested literacy, the U.S. students still tend to lag behind students in other countries with respect to some measures of achievement, particularly in mathematics and science. leads almost every other industrialized country in college attainment, and the academic achievement of American students has been improving in recent years, U.S. The education of the work force is growing more rapidly in other countries than in the U.S. The data suggest that American workers are more productive, on average, than workers in any other country however, worker productivity in several industrialized countries is gradually catching up to that in the U.S. The handbook provides data on the following subjects: the trends in worker productivity and the contribution of education the economic consequences of education for individuals educational achievement adult literacy and the training of labor force participants. This handbook highlights several measures of productivity and education, and addresses the link between these two sets of measures. Worker productivity is affected by many factors, including the education and skills of the work force. work force is a primary determinant of the standard of living of the U.S. ![]() The program continues to be expanded to provide support for more students throughout the engineering calculus sequence. As a result of participating in the summer bridge program, students were able to begin the engineering curriculum sooner, saving both time and money for their college education. ![]() Students who did not raise their score above 21 out of 33, whether or not they participated in the summer program, had to take Precalculus before enrolling in Engineering Calculus L Because Precalculus is primarily taken as remedial preparation for Engineering Calculus I, the purpose of the course is to strengthen mathematics skills needed for the calculus course. Of the students who participated in the summer program, 81% raised their scores on the Mathematics Placement Exam (MPE) sufficiently to be cleared to register for Engineering Calculus in the fall. With the goal of increasing success in Engineering Calculus I, and consequently retaining engineering majors, the Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M University, through a grant from the National Science Foundation, established a summer program to bridge high school mathematics knowledge to requisite mathematics knowledge for Engineering Calculus I. In particular, students need to successfully complete an engineering calculus sequence of at least four courses to fulfill their requirements for an engineering degree. The path to success in engineering is through mathematics.
